August 3rd

As the battle continues, Zar’Kaa struggles against the skeletal hands holding him in place. His feet had started to sink into the earth, but he braces himself against his spear and shatters the bones–freeing himself. He then runs back to Yenniku, placing himself between the other troll and the undead raptor that had started to prowl forward.

Zar'Kaa says: Get Yenniku out!

Vanira looks back, seeing her son, and nods.

One of the tormented troll spirits moves towards Uther. It reaches out, grabbing him with shadowy energy. The storm wolf grabs the remaining risen headhunter and shakes it back and forth before tossing the mutilated corpse aside. It charges for the dire troll zombie that was grappling Seria, ripping through sinew and bone, but the massive troll manages to hold on tight.

Suddenly, there is a flash of light and a figure appears near Seria. It’s Vol’jin.

Vol'jin says: I be standin’ wit ya!

He spins his spectral glaive around and then holds it out–sending a beam of shadowy towards Zalazane. More of the chains are broken, the tormented troll spirits disappearing. Zalazane’s face contorts in an unholy rage.

Zalazane shrieks: VOL’JIN!

However, the spirit of Vol’jin vanishes again.

Zalazane says: I won’t be defeated so easily! The darkness is mine to command!

He holds his skeletal hands up, and more violet energy surges around him. Two more spirits are rechained–drawing them back into the conflict. He then raises his arm and a wave of blood red water starts to wash towards the group–but it’s not truly water, it’s raw spiritual energy with faces of tormented trolls reaching out in anguish. It washes over Uther and where Vol’jin was and impacts Vel, but innured to the effects of death Vel puts her arm up and braces herself–the spirits having minimal effect.

Vel uses [Wall of Force], creating a pathway that she starts to run up straight at Zalazane. She casts [Chill Touch] on him, the skeletal hand pulling at him as she swipes at the spirit of Seria’s mother–enduring the swipe of her claw.

Zalazane says: Well, if it isn’t you.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s over.
Zalazane says: You’re right. But not for the reasons you be thinkin’ girl. I will not let you get in the way of the salvation of my people!

He starts to cast [Hex of Weakness], but Vel flips her blade into a reverse grip and counters the spell.

Zalazane says: This isn’t over yet, girl!

He drifts backwards, away from her. The dire troll tries to go for Seria again, but the fey dragon whips out its tongue–which attaches to the trolls head and pulls it off. It then flips around and grapples the tiny polymorphed devilsaur lizard. It takes off into the air.

Remnii looks at Yenniku, who is still struggling against the hands.

Remnii says: I won’t be able to get you out, but…

She gives him an apologetic look as she casts [Death Ward].

Remnii says: We’ll get you free soon!

Zalazane claps his skeletal hands and uses disrupt life on Vel, who is able to resist the effect.

Zalazane says: It seems ya not be the same as ya were before… there ain’t much life left in them eyes of yours.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Speak for yourself.

She bares her fangs.

The spectral bear ignores Uther and instead runs for Seria. She roars, an otherworldly sound echoing across the battlefield.

Zuni shrieks: Shit. SHIT. I HATE GHOSTS!

As the bear runs, the plants at its paws wilt and die, their life essence flowing into the massive spirit.

Uther swings at the nearest tormented spirit, destroying the mask on it and the spirit disappears. He follows after Vel, freeing another tormented spirit in the process.

Uther Menethil says: Vel, duck!

He throws his hammer and Vel butterfly kicks out of the way as Light’s Vengeance breaks through its mask and then appears back in his hand.

Distraught Consort screams: Rai!? Vol’jin!? Where are you!?

The fiery-haired troll woman shrieks

Distraught Consort screams: Zuhi?! Where are you? IT BURNS!

She rips out locks of her own hair as heat rips around her–smoke and fire washing over everyone around her. Yenniku barely manages to stay up thanks to Remnii’s death ward. A zombie raptor jumps at Zar’Kaa, biting and snapping at him.

Tol’vas casts [Sunfire], dropping radiant, silvery light on both the ursine matriarch and immolated consort. Meanwhile, the skeletal hands dig into Seria’s flesh and knock her out of her form.

Kala roars [zandali]: You abandoned me! You left me for dead!

She roars at Seria, who has tears welling in her eyes. She casts [Moonfire], targeting her mother, and then she panics–trying to break free of the spectral hands. She is unsuccessful.

Seria says [zandali]: I never left you!

The forlorn magistrix starts to sing, twirling with a level of grace that is unnerving. She then becomes blurry, and then splits into three identical copies–each of them dancing and crying and singing a familiar lullaby.

Zekhan grabs Zuni by the shoulders.

Zekhan says: Snap out of it, mon!

He smacks him across the face and casts [Lesser Restoration]–snapping him out of his frightened state. Zekhan then commands his spiritual weapon to attack the immolated consort.

Zekhan says: Be at peace, spirit!

Vanira runs back to her son.

Vanira says: Hold still!

She manages smash through the skeletal arms with her glaive.

Vanira says: I got you! You’re alright!

In a daze, Yenniku nods, and Vanira grabs him and holds him close. Meanwhile, Zuni focuses on Seria.

Zuni says: Hold still, Seria, I got ya!

He starts to rip off the skeletal hands around Seria’s legs, freeing her. He then looks at the ursine matriarch with fear, but courage.

Zulfli'jin says: Tormented spirits, your will is not your own! Fight back, I compel you!

She brings her glaive down and casts [Bane] on the ursine matriarch, her mother, and the forlorn magistrix. There seems to be a spark in their eyes–one of fear, pain, and defiance.

Vanira is still comforting her son.

Vanira says: Take this. Use it!

She pushes something into his hands. It’s a potion. She directs him to the rear of the group.

Vanira says: Got over there!
Zekhan says: I got ya!

Zekhan helps guide him away from the heart of the combat.

Meanwhile, the forlorn magistrix copies dance around Vel and reach out–as if to pull her into the dance. But the dance starts to get interrupted as she fights against the control of Zalazane.

Zar’Kaa continues to swing at the zombie raptor, decimating it with a decisive blow. He looks up at the fey dragon.

Zar’Kaa says [zandali]: I need a ride!

As he waves his hands at it, it does not seem to understand what he said.

Tol’vas Moonshadow says [sylvan]: He needs a ride!

There is a giggle in Zar’Kaa’s mind.

Fey Dragon says [telepathically]: Maybe if you ask nicely!
Zar’Kaa says [zandali]: Could you translate please?

Tol’vas translates, and the fey dragon swoops down next to him as he runs to back up Seria with the massive ursine spirit.

Zar’Kaa says [zandali]: I’m sorry, Kala.

He strikes into her with his axe and Vol’jin appears once more next to Zulfli.

Vol'jin says: We strike togetha.

Zulfli nods and Vol’jin spins in with his glaive on the spirit of his wife.

Vol'jin says: You can fight this Moraya, my love.

More tormented spirits issue forth from the lake, once again chained to Zalazane.

Zalazane says: Ya think you and I be so different. I show ya how similar we be!

Zalazane reaches out to Vel, and a tether connects them. Meanwhile, the immolated consort reaches out to Zulfli.

Moraya says: Zuhi? Is that you?

Necrotic magic washes over Zulfli.

Zalazane looks between Uther and Vel.

Zalazane says: Oh! Hohoho! I do remember you, mon! I ‘think it went somethin’ like this!

He reaches out and casts [Harm] on Uther, cackling wildly.

Zuni runs for Kala and manages to land a shield bash with his little buckler before he swings around with his spear.

Vel pirouettes around one of the copies of her mother and then vanishes as she casts [Steel Wind Strike]–destroying the mask on one of the tormented spirits and causing all three copies of her mother to waver. As she strikes at Zalazane, she feels a surge of pain from the tether connecting them, but she is able to resist whatever effect he had in place.

Seria casts [True Seeing], and she is able to see on both sides of the material. Rai is just watching them–seemingly able to see beyond the boundary. His eyes are on his mother. She also sees the true form of the forlorn magistrix–who seems to be invisible and separate from the copies she had summoned.

Seria calls out to warn Vel and Uther, and Uther senses a slight displacement in the air. Nirenn materializes, reaching out to Uther. Her mouth moves, as if she’s trying to say something, but all that comes out is the lullaby. More of his essence is drawn from him.

Tol’vas casts [Wrath] at Seria’s mother, who seems to be fighting Zalazane’s control more and more. He then casts [Roar], releasing a shout that sounds something like a howl.

The fey dragon gets clipped by the ursine matriarch and it winces as its life essence is drained.

Zekhan rains down more lightning from his [Call Lightning] and has his spiritual weapon continue to swing at Moraya.

Kala reaches her paw out to swipe at Seria.

Kala says: No…

She forces her paw down.

Kala says: I will not… be… a pawn…

The storm wolf bites at Kala, pouncing at her. It tears the mask off, and Seria touches the top of Kala’s paw. The bear staggers, and the malice and shadows fade. She looks at the wolf.

Kala says: …Thank you for freeing me.

She then looks at Seria.

Kala says: Let us end this. Together.

She turns around to face Zalazane, and then roars. Her form melds into a missile of spiritual energy that strikes into Zalazane–vanishing. His barrier flickers, and then shudders.

One of the copies of Nirenn is stunned from system shock, reaching for something they cannot see.

Vanira says: Moraya, you’ve suffered enough. Let me help you!

She approaches the screeching consort, swinging her glaive around in a series of strikes. Remnii casts [Mind Sliver], driving a mental wedge between Moraya’s mind and Zalazane’s.

Remnii says: She’s almost free!

Zulfli releases a series of attacks at her mother alongside Vanira and Vol’jin, dancing with their glaives almost in a purification ritual. Zulfli plants her glaive in the ground.

Zulfli'jin says: Be at peace… mada. You need suffer no longer!

The mask is blasted from Moraya’s face, and the flames are extinguished. She reaches out to Zulfli and puts her hands on her face, and plants a kiss on her forehead. She also turns into a missile of spiritual energy, and blasts straight into Zalazane.

Once more, the barrier shudders.

Zulfli'jin says: Lets finish this!

One of the copies reaches for Vel, but then there is a splinter of recognition, and she starts to sob.

Finally, the dire troll zombie managed to erupt from the rubble that had buried it with a roar.

A surge of light magic washes through Zalazane as Uther strikes into him, and Vel feels the light try to surge through the tether. She resists, wincing.

Uther Menethil says: You’ve made many mistakes, Zalazane. But the worst one was hurting my friend. Do you remember what fear is? No matter. Allow me to reacquaint you!

Uther swings down again, and the barrier around Zalazane breaks as Vel once again manages to resist the surge of light that tried to follow the tether to her. Zalazane is thrown into the water below, and the chains and tethers break.

Nirenn is there for the briefest of moments as she floats towards Vel.

Nirenn Windrunner says: Vela?

Then she chokes, and blood drips from her lips.

Velameestra Windrunner shouts: Minn’da?!

Something moves under her dress, and the manifestation of the hex clambers onto her head and drives its fangs into her.

Uther Menethil says: Any ideas?

Vel is frozen, staring at her mother’s form, and the spirit grabs at the bridge. Spectral, tiny spiders start to try and scurry on Vel, Uther, and Zulfli–but they are able to step back, Vel breaking her trance just in time.

The spirit dips between graceful motions and jerky, predatory movements. The hex darts over to Vel and waves of magic burst forward. She knows this power–it seems to exude the raw magic of the Hungering Hex.

Zar’Kaa clambers onto the fey dragon’s back, and it takes off.

More energy continues to waft over them, more spiders trying to clamber onto them. An aimless desire to devour issues off her. As Zulfli continues to try and push through, she drops down to one knee–weakness over taking her.

The fey dragon soars by with Zar’Kaa on its back and it tries to use its bewildering breath, but the effect seems to have no effect on the manifestation of the Hex.

Zar'Kaa says: Chieftain! Get out of the melee!

He strikes into the Hungering Hex with his spear. The hex continues to look at Zulfli, who lurches in further pain–the effects on her intensifying.

Tol’vas runs towards the storm wolf and then uses [Blink] to get onto his back. He then casts [Wrath] at the hex, but it goes wide.

Zalazane is somewhat pitifully trying to crawl out of the water.

Seria fires a [Wrath] at the hex, and the spread of darkness across her dress starts to slow. She then casts [Moonfire], radiant energy falling down on the manifestation. It is able to avoid the brunt of the damage. It looks at Zar’Kaa, and small spiders start to scurry up his spear. They bite him, and he feels a surge of pain–like iron moving through his veins.

Remnii says: Stand tall, Uther!

Remnii uses her channel divinity, which washes over Uther.

Uther Menethil says: As you wish, my lady!

She then casts [Exorcism] on the Hungering Hex, and the holy energy washes over the manifestation. Uther rolls his shoulders and runs at the manifestation. He swings twice, unable to get a good angle. He quickens a [Green-Flame Blade] and this time he manages to connect, a surge of energy washing over it.

The pain in Zar’Kaa’s veins worsens, and his body starts to lurch.

Vel’s eyes are transfixed on the manifestation, blood dripping down her face from her eyes. She reaches out her hand to her side, smokey death energy wafting off her tattoos as she casts [Ossein Mend] on herself, some of her wounds healing.

Velameestra Windrunner says: What you want is down below… Leave her alone.

She draws her sword back and uses [Frost Strike], cutting into the hex with a surge of cold energy. However, as the hex squeals, she hears the sound of a woman screaming–interrupting her momentum as her second attack is narrowly evaded by the spirit’s jerking movements.

The storm wolf’s fangs crackle, and it shoots a blast of lightning at the spirit.

Zuni hurries over to Seria.

Zuni says: Are you alright?

Seria nods, wiping tears from her eyes.

Zuni says: It’s alright! We just have some loose ends to wrap up!

He tries to throw some javelins, but they go wide.

Zuni says: I’ll watch your back! It’s alright!
Zekhan says: Wait for me!

He hurries towards the bridge, and Zulfli casts [Bane] on the hex. However, it resists. Zar’Kaa swings at the manifestation, trying to push through the pain of the hex. It’s almost unbearable.

Zuni manages to connect with one of his javelins, but as he reaches for his last one he curses.

Zuni says: I’m out of spears!

Yenniku continues to hide.

The Hungering Hex had continued to sense Zulfli’s weakness, and it turns to start to fly towards her. Zar’Kaa clips it.

Uther Menethil says: Vel DUCK!

He hurls his hammer at the back of the hex as it moves past Vel, drilling the manifestation in the back of the head. There is an explosion of holy energy as the hex started to pull Zulfli’s life essence from her. The spider is peeled off the specter, and it squeals–the bond broken–and hits the ground next to Zalazane.

The spectre looks at Vel.

Nirenn Windrunner says: …Vela?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Minn’da.

Remnii runs for Zulfli, using [Greater Restoration]. With weakening breaths, Zulfli uses [Guidance], and they are able to break the hold on the troll. Strength starts to seep back into her limbs.

Nirenn reaches out to Vel, who in turns touches her incorporeal hand.

Velameestra Windrunner says: I’m going to bring you back… soon…

Nirenn’s mouth moves, her words distant.

Nirenn Windrunner says: Thank you. I love you.

And then she disappears. Uther puts his arms around Vel from behind, and she grabs onto his arm.

Amused Voice says: Well well well, ain’t this a touchin’ sight!

A troll with a skull-face and blue, glowing orbs in his sockets manifests. He floats down to Zalazane’s side where he had pitifully crawled from the water.

Bwonsamdi says: That be some good work you all did! Though it looks like ol’ Zalazane did a number on our little friend here.

He nudges the twitching manifestation of the hex with a boney finger.

Bwonsamdi says: Aw. It’s okay little guy. Maybe I can give you a bit of a boost.

He kisses the tip of his bony finger, and blows. A tendril of energy enters the hex, and it gets up.

Bwonsamdi says: ‘dere you go.
Zalazane says: No… I won’t go back with ya! I won’t let you do this!
Bwonsamdi says: Awwww. Look at you, poor little Zalazane. You think that you be a master of death.

He clicks his tongue.

Bwonsamdi says: Ya should know better than to swing above your weight class. I think you and me have plenty to speak of, but I can wait in line.

The hex skitters and looks at Zalazane, who looks at it in terror. He tries to crawl away, but the hex leaps onto him and sinks its fangs into his back. Zalazane’s body is just drained of all color, and his flesh withers away–leaving nothing but bones and clothes. The thorax of the hex has a stylized imprint of Zalazane’s screaming face, and it curls into a ball. Bwonsamdi picks up one of its legs and shakes it. Excess spiritual energy falls away.

Bwonsamdi says: There we go.

He drops the hex in his mouth.

Bwonsamdi says: Now we get it back where it belongs.

He burps.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: That seems unsanitary.
Bwonsamdi says: Bit spicy! Now where ya be hidin’?

He looks around.

Bwonsamdi says: No matter.

He snaps his bony fingers, and light blue sparks rain from the spirits above. The magic Rokhan had used starts to fade, and everything is pulled back into the material plane. Bwonsamdi is still there. Slowly, the sparks coalesce and form into the images of trolls–all the spirits that were captured and tormented by Zalazane.

They appear one by one, forming a sea of translucent souls. Through the crowd, Seria sees the spirit of a bear ponderously approaching her. With each step it transforms into the spirit of Kala.

With a smile, Kala reaches out and wipes blood from Seria’s cheek.

Kala says: Seria…
Seria says: Mada…
Kala says: For so long have I done what I could to watch over you. But now… you be the one be savin’ me. Be savin’ all of us.

She gestures to all the other spirits, many other tearful unions happening around them.

Kala says: You and your friends have done somethin’ great here. And you have grown… so strong.
Seria says: I would have never done it without you.

Kala’s hand brushes against her cheek.

Kala says: I don’t think I believe that for a second. Your strength is all your own. My brave, brave Seria.

Seria starts to cry, holding her mother’s hand against her cheek, and Kala pulls her in. The embrace is cold, and not fully there, but she can feel Kala stroking the back of her head.

Seria says: I missed you so much.
Kala says: I will never be far. Every breath you take, I be there.

She touches the tusks around Seria’s neck.

Kala says: But you know that. You always know that. But now I can watch over ya properly. I think I prefer it that way.

Her eyes flicker to Zuni.

Kala says: And who is this?

Zuni snaps to attention.

Zuni says: Zuni, ma’am!

Kala chuckles.

Kala says: I see. Ya best be good, child. My Seria’s bite be better than her bark.

Zuni blinks and nods, unsure what she’s talking about, but clearly frightened.

Zekhan says: It be a pleasure to meet ya. I promise that Seria… she be… ya taught her good. She be somethin’ else.
Kala says: Ya don’t need to tell me that.

Zar’Kaa approaches and bows his head to Kala.

Zar'Kaa says: Glad you now be free from that monstrosity. You deserve much better, Kala.

Kala smiles.

Kala says: I died protectin’ the tribe. Any one of us would be proud to do somethin’ like that.

Zar’Kaa nods, and Seria hears another voice from behind her.

Rokhan says: Kala?

It’s Rokhan, and Kala smiles at him.

Kala says: Rokhan… I guess I should thank you as well, shouldn’t I?
Rokhan says: That be the last thing ya be doin’, Kala. After everythin’ I did… after everythin’ I didn’t do… I gave you my word, but I was too much of a coward.

Kala moves past Seria for a moment.

Kala says: Do you think I expect you to be perfect, Rokhan? No one can be perfect.

Rokhan looks up at her, and Kala smiles.

Kala says: Ya could have asked. Ya don’t really think I only had room in my heart for one, ya old fool.

She kisses him on the forehead, and tears start to stream down his face.

Rokhan says: I guess that be on me.
Kala says: A lot of things will be now, my old friend.

She trails a finger along his chin, and Rokhan takes her hand for a second before it slips through his fingers.

Vol’jin says: Bwonsamdi.

Vol’jin steps through the crowd.

Vol’jin says: We are not going to do this again. Whatever happened won’t be happenin’ again or you’ll be answerin’ to me. Understand that, loa?
Bwonsamdi says: Come now, ol’ Vol’jin. Ya know I didn’t mean–
Vol’jin says: No double talk. I be comin’ back, and we do this right. Zalazane be my responsibility as much as he be yours. I think we both know that.
Bwonsamdi says: I already got an earful from my bossman, I don’t need it from you too. But if you’re willin’ to pick up a few tasks here and there, I think there might be somethin’ I can do, and maybe I forgive ya for talkin’ to your loa like that!

Bwonsamdi throws his arm around Vol’jin’s shoulders.

Bwonsamdi says: I think ya got a few more minutes before we got to go.

He pushes Vol’jin forward, and he looks at Vanira, Rai, and Zulfli–now recovering. Vol’jin deflates with a soft smile.

Vol’jin says: I… I don’t know what to say. Ya saved all of our people… there ain’t be anyone I be trustin’ more with the future of our tribe.
Vanira says: I didn’t know you were alive. I would have found–
Vol’jin says: I didn’t know you were alive either. It’s okay. We all be losin’ much, that be a part of life. You know that more than anyone.
Vanira says: I will do everything I can to guide our people. And to protect them, like I tried to protect you.
Vol’jin says: The tribe be in good hands.

Vol’jin puts a hand on Rai’s head.

Vol’jin says: I be proud of you, my boy. For catchin’ on to what clues I be able to give ya. This be as much your victory as anyone else, despite what you are probably tellin’ yourself. So chin up.

Rai nods, tears in his eyes.

Rai says: Okay father.
Vol’jin says: That girl. She be a good one. Treat her well.

Vol’jin punches his shoulder, and Rai staggers and blushes with a nod.

Rai says: I love ya. I always be tryin’ to make you proud.
Vol’jin says: You always have, Rai.

Vol’jin musses his hair one last time.

Yenniku says: This isn’t fair!

Yenniku had emerged from behind the trees, his fists clenched.

Yenniku says: After all of this, ya just come and start givin’ speeches like ya did nothin’ wrong?! You ain’t even gonna say anything?

Vol’jin looks at Yenniku.

Vol’jin says: I don’t think there’s anything I can say to you, Yenniku. You have every right to hate me, and resent me for what I chose to do. I could have lied. Sent someone else. But I didn’t. But that responsibility lies on me, and me alone. Hate me. Revile me. Curse me with your dyin’ breath, but don’t hate the tribe. Don’t hate your mada. And most importantly, don’t hate yourself.

Yenniku drops to his knees and punches the ground. Zar’Kaa approaches and gently puts a hand on Yenniku’s shoulder, and the other troll curls up in anger and shuts down. Zar’Kaa gives him a reassuring pat.

Vol’jin looks at Zar’Kaa.

Vol’jin says: I owe you an apology as well.

Zar’Kaa looks around, but sees no one else around him.

Zar'Kaa says: Chieftain… why you be sayin’ that?
Vol’jin says: Because you be riskin’ your life today and a thousand days before. You fought as a true Darkspear, and I never… the sins of our father’s aren’t ours to bear. It’s a lesson I should know. Yet I said nothin’.

Zar’Kaa’s eyes close, and his head drops.

Zar'Kaa says: I didn’t earn your time, nor anyone else’s. That much was made clear.
Vol’jin says: I only realized how valuable that time was when I ran out of it.

Vol’jin pats him on the shoulder.

Vol’jin says: But we can’t be changin’ the past.

Zar’Kaa’s ears prick up, and his eyes open.

Zar'Kaa says: T-thank you, chieftain Vol’jin.

Vol’jin passes by Seria as he continues forward. He also puts a hand on her shoulder.

Vol’jin says: Thank you, Seria. For watchin’ over him for all these years. I’m sorry I didn’t say it sooner.

Seria nods, and Vol’jin looks at Rokhan next. They stare at each other for a long moment, and then they each hold their arms out and cross them against each other. There is a silent gesture of understanding and comradery. Vol’jin chuckles.

Bwonsamdi had laid back in the air, and he looks at his arm like he’s checking an imaginary watch.

Bwonsamdi says: Alright. Time to get goin’!

He claps his hands, and a massive gate of energy opens–beyond the gate is an endless cityscape of beautiful lights and the sounds of distant voices. The spirits all look, and then start to walk towards the gate.

Vol’jin says: Brothers and sistas of the Darkspear! We got to go! But we’ll be seein’ ya again. Under better circumstances! Watch over each other. Love each other. And know that Zulfli’jin be actin’ with my blessin’ as the chieftain!

He smiles, and nods at Zulfli. She meets the nod with as stoic a face as she could manage.

The crowd calls out in agreement, and the spirits flow through the gate after bidding their loved ones one last goodbye. Zulfli and Rai are embraced by Moraya, who holds them close and gives them each a kiss on the forehead. She whispers something with a smile.

Moraya then clasps Vanira’s hands before joining Vol’jin.

Kala looks at Seria.

Kala says: Time for me to go, little flower. But I won’t be far.
Seria says: I know.
Kala says: Stay strong. I will always love you.

She steps toward the portal, her hand fading from Seria’s grasp. As the spirits step through the gate, their translucent forms change to the same vibrant images of themselves in life. Only Bwonsamdi remains on this side.

Bwonsamdi says: I knew I was right, askin’ you Seria. Ya did good, kid. And all the rest of you as well. I be seein’ ya! And remember to give your prayers and tributes to ol’ Bwonsamdi!

Zar’Kaa hrmphs, and Bwonsamdi looks at him, but then saunters through the gateway. It closes behind him, and the lingering magic fades.

Zulfli breaks the silence.

Zulfli'jin says: We should head back to the village. Make sure everyone else is alright. We got some rafts on this side that we keep for emergencies.
Velameestra Windrunner says: If… you want to make it sooner, I can arrange that.
Zulfli'jin says: Some of us have to stay to take care of the bodies, but I don’t know what to say to the rest of you. You did a great service for us.

A villager raises his arm.

Darkspear Villagers says: Right chief!

Zulfli blinks.

Zuni says: What, ya didn’t think we weren’t gonna respect the words of the ol’ chief, right? He said you should lead the Darkspear.

Vanira nods and takes a blade across her chest.

Vanira says: Woe be it for me to deny the chief with his last words. The former chief. Your words are my command, Zulfli.

Zulfli looks at Rokhan.

Zulfli'jin says: What about you?

Rokhan sighs.

Rokhan says: I think that both of us would benefit from… a second conversation. I think we both have a lot to talk about. Chieftain.

Rokhan bows his head.

Zulfli'jin says: There are few who understood how my father led our people more than you and Vanira. Despite our differences, I will be glad to have your wisdom and your council, Rokhan. Even if I want to throw you into the sea sometimes.

Rokhan chuffs.

Zulfli'jin says: This magic–I presume that you can get us back via the magic portals. Some other mages can help as well. I think you’ve done enough for us. We can open portals to the main island.

Zulfli looks at Soratha, who had also come. He looks back at her, then at Vanira, then sighs and nods.

Soratha says: As ya say, chieftain.

A few mages remain behind to ensure those tending to the bodies can get back. It will take some time to rebury if all the bodies are identified and buried where they should be. During the reunion time, there was another flower left on Zekhan’s mother’s grave. Zekhan's eyes immediately went to Vel.

Zekhan says: That was you, wasn't it?

Vel nods. He looks down at the flower, and he hugs her. Vel freezes, before she slowly hugs him back.

Zekhan says: Thank you.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I know what that’s like.
Zekhan says: She saw it.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Ah.

He pulls away.

Zekhan says: Sorry… thank you.

The group returns to the mainland, and they see that damage was fortunately minimal at the village. There would have to be some repairs, but everyone starts to go about their business as they can.

Rokhan and Vanira give a quick speech to the villagers there, explaining what had happened, and that Zulfli should be treated as the chieftain. There are no voices in protest–or any that rise are quickly silenced. It seems the island would start to be referred to as Zalazane’s Fall.

Zulfli'jin says: Thank you all for draggin’ me here from Zandalar. All things considered, it was good I was here. And Remnii, was it?
Remnii says: Yes.
Zulfli'jin says: I owe you my life. If there be anythin’ that I can do for you in the future, let me know.

Remnii smiles and nods.

Remnii says: It was not my strength alone.

She bows her head respectfully.

Remnii says: Thank you, chief.
Zulfli'jin says: I can speak to Yenniku to ensure he gets back to Zandalar soon. I will have to return there and let everyone know what happened.
Zar'Kaa says: And I’ll be comin’ chieftain.
Zulfli'jin says: I think we can use all the help we can get.
Zar'Kaa says: Even if I wanted to, I can’t say no now! Anything else, chieftain?
Zulfli'jin says: The geas should wear off in a month or two. I might keep it on to ensure you stay in line. Ya did good, Zar’Kaa. Never thought I’d be sayin’ the words, but ya did.
Zar'Kaa says: Never thought I’d be hearin’ them.
Zulfli'jin says: And I’d like to thank all of ya. Right now we got meager supplies. I don’t know if there be much I can offer in thanks. But I be makin’ up for that in the future. If you need to stay here, you’re welcome.

Zar’Kaa holds up a finger.

Zar'Kaa says: Hold on.

He looks at Vel.

Zar'Kaa says: Ya want to be stayin’ somewhere, ya be stayin’ somewhere else, undead.

He starts to close the distance, but Uther and Seria immediately get in his way.

Zulfli'jin says: Ya mind tellin’ me what be goin’ on here?
Zar'Kaa says: Not all undead stayed on Zalazane’s Fall. One be walkin’ among us! And a vampyr at that! So, you come into my village–
Seria says: How DARE you insult my judgment!

Zar’Kaa looks at Seria.

Zar'Kaa says: Ya want to talk about your judgement? You bring this thing amongst OUR people? And you ask me how dare I? This thing be a walkin’ danger to all of us? But not that that matter to–

Seria’s smacks him.

Seria says: How dare you say that to me! After everythin’ we been through.
Zar'Kaa says: You defend a monster over–
Uther Menethil says: I think everyone would benefit from taking a breath and calming down.
Zulfli'jin says: I’m inclined to agree with Uther.
Rokhan says: And she wasn’t the only one that knew. I was aware of her nature. She was candid. Yet she still went out of her way to ensure we could do what we needed. We would not have been able to take down Zalazane without her help.
Zar'Kaa says: All this time you knew? And you didn’t think to tell me!?
Uther Menethil says: I don’t suppose you’ve noticed, but it’s not particularly relevant is it?
Zar'Kaa says: It’s completely relevant. My people have suffered the undead long enough!
Velameestra Windrunner says: And what have I done? You claim I’m a monster but what have I done?
Zar'Kaa says: You think me omnipotent? I can guess any one of your victims, now past or future.
Rokhan says: Zar’Kaa, I understand you’re angry. But this woman, this elf, risked everythin’ to help us, and you are forgettin’ your station. I don’t owe you an explanation. I tell you everythin’ you need to know to accomplish your goals.
Zar'Kaa says: I didn’t have to leave with you two years ago. I didn’t have to throw down my bare reputation for you, but I did. And in return you betray my trust!
Rokhan says: So I did. Do what you want, Zar’Kaa. But this is over.
Zulfli'jin says: That is my call to make. Zar’Kaa, this is my tribe. This is our tribe. Not your tribe. You don’t get to make those decisions. But you raise points. Good ones.

Zulfli looks back at the group.

Zulfli'jin says: I am thankful, but this is somethin’ I would have liked to know. This is somethin’... that would best be discussed later, and as Uther said, on calmer heads. You’ll forgive me if I rescind my suggestion to stay here. In spite of everything, it may be wise to return to where you came from.
Uther Menethil says: We aren’t in the habit in overstaying’ our welcome.
Zar'Kaa says: Just one more question then, before you go on your way.

He looks to Vel.

Zar'Kaa says: Was this fate forced upon you? Or did you choose it?
Velameestra Windrunner says: My choices are mine. And my sacrifices are mine.
Zar'Kaa says: Zalazane thought he was making sacrifices. So I guess that makes you no better than him.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Zalazane killed my mother, and arranged the death of my people well before he was undead.
Uther Menethil says: Be an awful shame if we assumed all trolls were like that, wouldn’t it?
Zar'Kaa says: There be a difference between the living and the dead. A difference one such as you would know!
Uther Menethil says: And there’s a difference between humans and trolls, and tauren and night elves and goblins! There’s differences between everybody!
Velameestra Windrunner says: Zalazane was my enemy and he was a monster. I have no ill will towards anyone here, nor desire to bother anyone.
Zar'Kaa says: You keep telling yourself that, undead. The wheel always turns. And one day, you gonna find yourself unable to resist it. And I hope for your friends' sake that you’re far away from them. I have nothing more to say.

He looks to Seria like he’s going to say something else. But he shakes his head thinking there’s no point.

Zar’Kaa’s face softens as he looks at Remnii, but he storms off. Remnii does return him a warm nod, but with a hint of hesitation given everything that just happened.

Velameestra Windrunner says: I apologize if my existence made your lives harder. I’m going to retrieve my ring and we’ll be leaving.
Zulfli'jin says: In spite of everything, you still risked yourself to save our people. And I won’t forget that.
Uther Menethil says: In spite of everything, we’d do it again.
Zulfli'jin says: Hopefully you won’t have to do so again.

Rokhan sighs.

Rokhan says: I be sorry about this, Velameestra. I should have told him.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I know the path I was walking.
Rokhan says: I know. And I know you know that you’re going to face something like this. This one you can walk away, leave it behind you. But it won’t be the last time, and next time it may be your own people. I know that your people don’t keep the loa. But I hope they watch over you anyway. Give you the strength to face challenges like this. See if I can smooth things over. If anything you proved to me today that you’re more than your nature.

Vel nods in gratitude.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Rohkan, one final question. Your expertise. Do you know anything about the hexes caused by the bloodbone daggers?
Rokhan says: I do. It is believed they take the strength they cut from their victims and burn it as fuel. But that burning ain’t easy to recover.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Is there a way to do it?
Rokhan says: There is. But you’d likely need to get your hands on one of them. And they ain’t been seen in some time. That be Hakkar magic. Deep magic, old magic. As deep and old as Zandalar itself. But to use that, you may be able to break through.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Thank you.
Rokhan says: If I see one, or hear anything about one, I’ll try to reach out to you. But if not, happy hunting.

Rokhan gives Seria a soft smile.

Rokhan says: I’m glad that you came back. If ya…

He fumbles for a moment.

Rokhan says: If ya want, Seria… I don’t think anyone would be opposed to ya stayin’. If ya want. We could use someone with your wisdom and skills… especially if all this is gonna happen. If this is gonna be our new home, it will be a home for you too.
Seria says: That’s good to know, but I have other business to take care of.

Rokhan smiles.

Rokhan says: I know.
Seria says: Let the chieftain know I take full responsibility.

She glances at Vel.

Rokhan nods.

Rokhan says: I don’t think I’ll be lettin’ ya take full responsibility–

Seria shakes her head.

Seria says: I wouldn’t have brought her if I didn’t think she couldn’t help.
Rokhan says: Very well. I can’t say no to that. Besides, if Bwonsamdi wanted her involved along with you, I think that’s more than enough. If you need anythin’, Seria, you know where I’ll be.

Rokhan looks like he has a thousand other things to say, but he just smiles.

Rokhan says: Take care, kid.

Rokhan gives the group one last nod before heading off.

Zar’Kaa had stormed off to train, and he suddenly hears a voice in his head.

Mysterious Voice says [telepathically]: You don’t know what a monsssta is! You don’t know what you’re talking about! If you ever sssspeak to her like that again, I’ll make ssssure it’s the last thing you do!

Zar’Kaa looks around, but he doesn’t see anyone. The only thing he sees is a motion in the trees, and then the beating of wings–like something had flown away from it.

Vel managed to find Yenniku alongside Remnii. He was kind of standing around. He didn’t seem to have heard anything about Zar’Kaa’s outburst.

Remnii says: Yenniku?
Yenniku says: Hey. Ya need me to do somethin’ else?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I… needed my ring back.
Yenniku says: Shit… I guess this is yours.

He rubs the back of his neck.

Yenniku says: Maybe I was hearing things. But does this ring talk to people?
Velameestra Windrunner says: It was cursed with a hex that consumes souls. It wouldn't be surprising.
Yenniku says: That seems just about in line with anythin’ else… it didn’t say anything after the hex was taken care of. So maybe your ring ghosts have been taken care of. I’d be glad to get rid of your ring ghosts.

He gives her back the ring.

Velameestra Windrunner says: You did good.
Yenniku says: Heh. All I did was exist. And get in the way. But. If you say so.
Remnii says: This would not have been a success without you, Yenniku. There was a lot for you to digest, and a lot for you to go through. There is more worth to a person… you did do good today.
Yenniku says: It be real strange though. I’m just supposed to go back to my normal job… pretend like none of this happened. Pretend I didn’t see the dead ghost of my father. Of… I think I need a good drink, if we’re bein’ serious.

Remnii smiles.

Remnii says: Perhaps. I don’t know how things are for you with these Gurubashi that I know nothing about… but if there is mobility, try to find a job you don’t hate.
Yenniku says: We’ll see about that. I only have so much control. I envy you all. You and Seria. You can do anything you want. Must be nice. But… ain’t the life for everyone. At the very least, I can’t hold it against these people. It wasn’t their fault that Vol’jin did what he was told. That be what my life be built on doin’. At the very least, I can’t say the last few days haven’t been interestin’. Have to get used to this though.

He touches the tip of his tusk.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Perhaps ask if there’s anything you can do. You might be surprised. If you want to leave, ask how you can leave. And work towards it. You won’t know unless you try.

Remnii nods, but Yenniku shrugs.

Yenniku says: I’ll give it a shot. It probably can’t hurt anything more then what I’ve been through in the last couple of days. Ya be goin’ with Seria, yeah? Make sure she doesn’t get herself killed. I don’t think she needs to worry about that, but do it anyway.
Velameestra Windrunner says: She’s more apt to make it so that we don’t get ourselves killed.
Remnii says: You took the words out of my mouth! She has often pulled me out of the fire.
Yenniku says: My brothers seem to be fond of her. So… makin’ sure they don’t come and complain to me about somethin’ happening… probably for the best. I guess I should be headin’ back to see if there’s somethin’ I can occupy my time with.
Remnii says: Everyone is chipping in. Your help will be invaluable.
Yenniku says: Be seein’ ya.
Remnii says: Take care, Yenniku.

Yenniku moves by them, waving back as he heads back to the village.

Velameestra Windrunner says: We should make our way back too.

Remnii nods.

Zuni makes his way over to Seria.

Zuni says: Is that… true? About Vel? What Zar’Kaa be sayin’?

Seria nods.

Zuni says: That’s… that be somethin’, isn’t it? But she still helped us… so she must not be like the ones like Zalazane, at the very least. I mean, I could barely think someone like that would be walkin’ around town… she don’t seem that different. I didn’t pick up on it! But… if you trust her, then I don’t see any reason not to trust her myself, right? Shame you’re gonna be leavin’. Would have been nice to have you around for a bit.

Seria looks confused.

Zuni says: Don’t give me that look. It always be fun when you come around! Did… did I say somethin’ weird?

Seria sighs.

Seria says: Ya, I remember your friends chucklin’ about… me bein’ half the troll?
Zuni says: Did they hurt your feelin’s? Look, they think they’re funny, but they go too far. That’s not fair, you’ve probably dealt with that your whole life. Look at you! You are twice the troll any of them was! I remember who they was, I’ll talkin’ to them after you get out of here, because that’s not gonna fly. You deserve more respect than that! You… didn’t think I thought like that, did you?

Seria is silent for a long moment.

Seria says: It wouldn’t be the first time someone…
Zuni says: Awww man!

He throws his hands up.

Zuni says: I would never think somethin’ like that, Seria! I know ya be different, but that’s okay, mon! Honestly, I think, I mean, ya know, I think it’s a good thing! It be makin’ you who you are! And like, ya know… I don’t know why they be makin’ fun of what you look like! If you… get what I mean…
Seria says: I don’t.
Zuni says: I mean… if you want me to say it, I guess… I think you look pretty cute is what I’m tryin’ to say. Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if the others thought so too, but they aren’t as good at expressin’ what they think as I am! How about this, anyone else do that? Point them in my direction. I’ll give them an earful. You shouldn’t be self-conscious about anything about you.

Seria starts to blush.

Zuni says: I don’t want to take up all your time– well, I do, but I know you have to go. Maybe if you stop by again, you won’t have to run off again, huh? By then maybe this place will look like a real village, huh!
Seria says: Maybe…

Zuni gives her a soft tap on the side of the arm.

Zuni says: It was good seein’ ya! I look forward to next time. Hopefully not too long, huh?

He flashes her a smile and then heads off as another headhunter calls for him to stop flirting and come help.

Then he hears an “ow” behind her, and she sees Rai, who had tripped over a pot.

Rai says: Sorry! I wasn’t spyin’! I just… wanted to say goodbye. We got a lot of work, but so do you.

He glances after Zuni, and Seria is still quite red in the face and ears.

Rai says: Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone, I swear! But good luck. I’ll see ya soon. Be safe?
Seria says: You too.

Seria gives Rai a hug, and he smiles at her before heading off.

Before long, the group gathers together again. Maraad and Elissa had helped for a short bit with some of the bodies.

Elissa Cross says: I guess we should get going then, huh? Are you alright Vel?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yeah. I’m fine. If everyone is ready I can get us back to Timbermaw. But, thank you everyone.

Vel looks specifically at Seria. Elissa gives Seria’s hand a little squeeze. Uther extends his hand to do the forearm grip.

Seria says: It was because they doubted my judgment.
Uther Menethil says: If I’m being honest, Seria, I don’t care why you did it. You did it. And that means something.
Remnii says: It means a lot, I would say.

Seria looks at Uther’s hand and bats it away, but it was sort of a high-five. Riff hurries up to them.

Riff says: Sorry, I was takin’ care of some things! I had to say bye to some friends!

Seria notes that he seems to be hiding something, but it’s probably harmless. Seria gives him a look, and he just smiles.

Maraad says: I believe we’re ready whenever you are, Miss Velameestra.

Vel nods and casts [Teleport] to get them back to Timbermaw Hold.
